Raised and lowered

Superscript lifts letters above the line and subscript drops them below it. Type any text above and both styles appear at once. Digits are included in both.

Superscript covers every letter and digit, and a capital that has no raised capital form uses the small raised letter. Subscript covers far fewer letters.

What the charts show

Each cell in the charts shows a letter, its Unicode code point and the Unicode version that added it. Dashed cells have no form, and they stay as typed in your text. Newer characters come from later versions of Unicode, and phones that are older than the version are more likely to show a box. That is why we left out the subscript W, Y and Z, which only appeared in version 18.0.0.

Using tiny letters well

Raised letters work best as a small accent: a short word after your name, a number beside a word, or a quiet label. Long lines of them are hard to read, especially on a phone screen in sunlight. Lowered letters are even rarer in apps, so test them where they will be seen. If a letter shows as a box, replace it with the normal letter.

Questions

Can I write a whole sentence in superscript?

You can, and every letter has a raised form here. It is harder to read than normal text, so keep it short.

Why are some subscript letters missing?

Unicode only has lowered forms for part of the alphabet, and the newest ones are not drawn by common fonts yet.

What do the version numbers mean?

They are the Unicode version in which each character was added. A higher number means a newer character.

Is it good for bios?

The superscript style is labelled Safe in our font test. Use it for a short flourish, such as a tiny word after your name.
