Three kinds of small

Tiny text (superscript) raises every letter and number. All 26 letters and ten digits have a form, with a lookalike chosen for a few capitals. Small caps draw capitals at the height of lowercase letters, and they are the easiest small style to read. Subscript lowers the letters, and it covers only part of the alphabet.

Two decorated rows, Soft small caps and Angel small caps, wrap small capitals in brackets or a halo of hearts.

Letters that stay normal

The table under the list is read from the Unicode character database. Small caps have no X, so an X in your text stays a normal x. Subscript has no form for B, C, D, F, G, Q, W, Y or Z, while all ten digits have one. W, Y and Z do exist in the newest Unicode, version 18.0.0, but we left them out because common fonts cannot draw them yet.

When a letter has no small form we leave it as typed instead of guessing a look-alike, so a subscript word can contain a mix of small and normal letters. That is a limit of Unicode, not of this page.

Questions

Is tiny text the same as superscript?

Yes. Tiny text is the everyday name for superscript, which raises letters above the line.

Why is my X not small?

Unicode has no small capital X, so it stays a normal letter in the small caps style.

Does small text count as fewer characters?

No. Each small letter is still one character, and many of them count double on X, because they sit outside the basic range that counts as one.

Is small caps safe for bios?

The small caps style is labelled Safe: every glyph was found in the fonts we measured. Remember that a screen reader may spell the letters out.
