Tap a symbol to copy it. A yellow dot means it can look different in some apps (for example it may turn into an emoji). A red dot means at least one system we measured has no glyph for it and may show a box. No dot means it passed our Android and Windows checks.

Text hearts

Plain symbols that stay text. A few can be turned into colour emoji by some apps, marked with a dot.

Hearts that ask to stay text (U+FE0E)

These add the invisible text-presentation character U+FE0E right after the heart, which asks apps to draw it as a flat text symbol instead of a colour emoji.

Heart combos

Hearts with small marks and wings.

Emoji hearts

These always show in colour, in the style of the phone. Pick them when you want colour.

Text hearts versus emoji hearts

Some heart characters can be drawn two ways: as a flat text symbol or as a red emoji. Apps choose. The heart suit and the heavy heart are examples, and they carry a yellow dot here because an app may turn them into emoji. The white heart suit has no such emoji form, so it stays as text.

The emoji hearts at the end of the page are real emoji. They always show in colour in the style of the phone.

Asking for text style with U+FE0E

Unicode has an invisible character, U+FE0E, called variation selector 15. Placed right after a heart, it asks an app to draw it as text. The group called Hearts that ask to stay text uses it. Apps are free to ignore the request, and users report that Discord names ignore it, so a zodiac sign or a heart can still show as a colour emoji there.

There are also 21 heart combos, with wings, brackets or small marks around a heart. A heart on its own looks small in a name, so a pair of marks around it makes it stand out.

Questions

Why did my heart turn red?

The character can be drawn as an emoji, and your app chose that look. Choose a heart without a dot, such as the white heart suit.

What is U+FE0E?

An invisible character that asks apps to draw the character before it as flat text. Apps may ignore it.

Which hearts are the safest?

The ones with no dot. They were found in all the system fonts we measured and cannot turn into an emoji.

Are emoji hearts text?

No. They are pictures drawn by the phone, and they differ from device to device.
