Discord limits

Fancy letters can go in display names, nicknames and About Me. They cannot go in the username itself.

Where fancy text goes on Discord

Discord names are in two parts. The username is the plain @name and takes lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods only, so fancy Unicode can never go there. The display name and the server nickname take most valid Unicode, up to 32 characters. The About Me box holds 190 characters, and Discord says it accepts markdown, links, emoji and Unicode.

Discord warns that it limits some zero-width and non-rendering characters in names, and trims extra space at the start, the end and inside. The list of blocked characters is not published, so test an unusual character before you rely on it.

Safe copy and the tag mode

The Discord-safe switch is on here because chat is where symbols go wrong. In messages, Discord reads * _ ~ ` | > # and the backslash as formatting, so a face or divider that contains them can lose parts. The switch adds a backslash in front of each one. This comes from community reports and not from an official page. Turn it off for name fields, where a backslash would show as text.

The server tag mode keeps only the first four characters of your text, because a tag holds at most 4. Discord says tags take letters, numbers and certain special characters, but it does not list which ones, and emoji and spaces are reported not to work. We cannot confirm that fancy letters are accepted, so try one in your server first. The server tag maker goes further. The font test behind the labels is in the compatibility data.

Questions

Can I use fancy fonts in a Discord username?

No. Discord says usernames take only a to z, 0 to 9, underscore and period. Use the fonts in your display name or nickname.

What is the Discord name limit?

32 characters for display names and nicknames, and 190 for About Me. Discord does not document how About Me is counted, code points or UTF-16 units.

Why do my symbols disappear in a message?

Characters such as asterisks and underscores are read as formatting. Use the Discord-safe copy.

Do all fancy fonts fit in a server tag?

Only styles where every letter stays one character can fit four. Whether Discord accepts them is not documented.
