Use these in bios and display names. Usernames and @handles on Instagram, TikTok, Discord and X only take plain letters, numbers and a few symbols. Safe, mostly safe and may show boxes come from our font tests.

Six ways to be bold

Bold serif looks like a heavy newspaper letter. Bold sans is cleaner and has no feet on the letters. Bold italic serif and Bold italic sans add a slant. Bold script is a heavy cursive, and Bold old English is heavy blackletter. Sans bold and the serif bold also cover the digits 0 to 9.

Why X counts bold letters twice

X counts a post by weight, with a limit of 280. Most plain characters weigh 1. Characters outside the basic ranges, which includes every mathematical bold letter and fullwidth letter, weigh 2. So a bold sentence uses up the limit twice as fast: at most 140 bold letters fit in one post.

Each row shows the X weight of your text in that style. For X names and bios the weighting is not documented, so the counter shows the weighted number as the safer guess.

Bold letters also count as two UTF-16 units each, which matters in tools that count that way.

Questions

Is bold text the same as a bold font?

No. A bold font thickens normal letters. These are separate bold letter characters, so they paste as text.

Does bold text work on X?

It posts, but it weighs 2 per letter. A 280 limit holds about 140 bold letters.

Is it searchable?

Search tools that normalise text see ordinary letters, but tools that do not will see different characters. Keep an important keyword in plain letters.

Can I make only one word bold?

Yes. Type only that word in the box, copy it, and paste it into the middle of your normal text.
