Old English letter chart

Five capitals, C H I R Z, come from the Letterlike Symbols block instead of the main block, so a few fonts draw them in a slightly different weight. They are highlighted below.

Two weights and a frame

The Old English style is the thin blackletter style. Bold old English uses the same shapes with a heavier stroke, which survives small screens better. The third row, Moon fraktur, puts the thin style between a crescent and a star.

Blackletter is hard to read in long lines. Keep it for a name or a short phrase, and put plain letters after it.

Five capitals from another block

Most capitals live in the main mathematical block. Five do not: C, H, I, R and Z come from Letterlike Symbols, which is an older block. They look the same to most readers, but a few fonts draw them in a slightly different weight. The chart under the list highlights them with their code points and the Unicode version that added each.

Numbers have no blackletter form, so digits in your text stay normal.

Using blackletter well

Old English letters have thick strokes and tight gaps, so they turn into a dark block when the word is long. Two or three words is a good limit. Capital letters carry most of the style, so a name with a strong first letter looks best. Pair it with a quiet frame, not a busy one, and test it on a phone before you pin it to a profile.

Questions

Is Old English the same as gothic?

In text generators, yes. Both names mean blackletter capitals and lowercase letters in the fraktur style.

Why do five capitals look slightly different?

C, H, I, R and Z are stored in an older block, and some fonts draw them separately from the rest.

Is blackletter safe for bios?

The styles are labelled Safe in our font test of Android 8 to 14 and Windows 10. iPhones were not tested.

Does it work for numbers?

No. Digits stay as typed.
